Regional Nature Reserve Grotta delle Farfalle

Regional Nature Reserve Grotta delle Farfalle (Chieti-Ita)

MANAGEMENT
FOUNDING DECREE Regional Law n. 5 30 March 2007
REGULATIONS
INTERESTED CITIES San Vito Chietino e Rocca San Giovanni
TOTAL AREA AND ZONING 510 ha
LOCATION The boundaries of the protected area do not directly reach the coast even though the line parallel to the sea near Vallevò, halfway between the two villages of San Vito and Rocca San Giovanni, divides the protected area from the more anthropized one. The Butterfly Cave Nature Reserve protects a series of ditches, crossed by short stretches of streams flowing hidden among the lush riparian vegetation, and some natural caves, a safe hiding place for partisans and displaced persons, during World War I. The ditches of the reserve, as a dense network, represent an interesting and unusual ecological corridor at low altitude; in an area with a strong agricultural industry, where several animal species, when moving, can remain hidden in the vegetation.

LOCATION The Po Delta Park in Emilia-Romagna has territorial and ecological characteristics that make it unique. The park is a protected area of great complexity: it is at the same time Overland Park, River Park and Coastal Park. It is the unstable relationship between water and land, their increasingly precarious balance, to make the Po Delta landscape so varied. Forests, pine forests and flooded forests alternate with inland wetlands of freshwater or saltwater. Biodiversity, particularly in the delta area, is extraordinary: there are more than 280 species of birds.
